In this session, CHAI will share its work with The Joint Commission to introduce AI Governance into the accreditation process for provider organizations, and will also provide an update on the development of forensic capabilities to audit clinical documentation to determine and differentiate what decisions and actions were made by AI and which were made by humans.

AI is no longer about speculation or predictions or pilots. It is in use across all organizations. As such, the best learning comes from the lessons of those who have used it. What is the extent of its capabilities? What are its limitations? What legal risks does it carry, and for whom? What does AI really cost? What are the hidden costs? How is it changing job functions? How can you keep up with its evolution? CRICO and Candello staff who are most involved in the rollout of AI will share their lessons learned, advice, and ideas for successfully deploying AI in various ways.

Town Meeting: Ballot Questions Related to Clinical AI Technologies

In five years, there will not be a physician, APP or nurse who will be typing into an electronic health record. AI offers a tremendous solution to the burden of clinical documentation and the provider burnout that accompanies EHRs. But this innovation is not without risk. In this “town meeting” format, Dr. Billingham will serve as Town Moderator to present ballot questions or “articles” for a vote to determine whether or not community members support the use of AI Scribes, OR Black Box video technology, and AI Diagnostics. Each article will have a Pro and a Con argument delivered by Paul Gryve and Brant Poling before the vote, and ensuing discussion from both in person and virtual participants.

Human Factors on Trial

Brant Poling, JD, Managing Partner at Poling Law, and Jan Sawyer, Human Factors Litigation Consultant from Litigation Focus Groups

Plaintiff attorneys have been integrating human factors into their trial strategy for several years. As part of a broader effort to counter the plaintiff bar, defense attorneys, such as Brant Poling, have begun to apply human factors engineering to trial preparation. Jan Sawyer specializes in integrating aviation human factors into litigation development and trial models. She utilizes neuroscience, instructional fundamentals, and specialized imprinting techniques to enhance case presentation. This approach has already been credited to have reduced some trial verdicts and settlements from eight figures to seven figures.

When Harm Happens: Communication and Reconciliation Programs that Drive Healing, Trust, and Improvement

Comprehensive harm response programs (sometimes called CRP, CARe, or CANDOR Programs) have proven to be essential tools for driving patient safety and risk management improvement, fostering a culture of safety, and reducing malpractice risk. Over the last 5 years, The Center for Harm Response has partnered with Ariadne Labs to support healthcare organizations across the country as they developed comprehensive, highly reliable programs to respond to healthcare harm through their engagement in the Pathway to Accountability, Compassion, and Transparency (PACT). This session will provide insights into the importance of these programs and what we’ve learned from helping organizations with their implementation.
