Candello is not a professional association, a software vendor, a training platform, an AI agent, or a publisher. It is a 28-year-old, constantly evolving “learning engine” that was built for one purpose: To generate outputs from inputs and provide expertise and a forum to reduce patient harm and financial risk. Data partners have unfettered access to the taxonomy, data, tools, content, expertise, and a community of peers who are fighting the same battles. Real data, real people, doing real work.

How to Become a Data Contributor
Candello’s National Data Collaborative is built on trusted partnerships with healthcare organizations, insurers, and risk-bearing entities that contribute medical professional liability (MPL) data to support national benchmarking, research, and improvement efforts.
1. Determine Eligibility
Organizations that typically contribute data include:
- Self-insured hospitals and health systems
- Commercial medical professional liability (MPL) insurers and captives
- Risk retention groups
Contributors must have access to structured MPL claims and exposure data and a commitment to data quality and transparency.
2. Connect with the Candello Team
Interested organizations begin by meeting with Candello to discuss:
- The organization’s needs and objectives
- The Candello Taxonomy and coding process
- Candello offerings, demos, and pricing
- Use cases most relevant to the organization (benchmarking, analytics, research)
This initial conversation ensures alignment and helps Candello tailor the onboarding process.
3. Contracting Process
Before any data is shared, organizations:
- Assess quality of source documents used for coding
- Data security review and assessment
- Development of unique and secure data environment
- PLSA/BAA review and execution
4. Get Started
Once onboarded, data partners receive:
- Full access to Candello’s exclusive national peer community and content
- Licenses and training on Candello’s analytical tools
- A calendar of meetings with the Candello client support team
Data partners both strengthen the national dataset and directly benefit from insights not available elsewhere.
Candello data should be and is used by its members for identifying targeting risk management and patient safety interventions, optimizing favorable outcomes from claims and suits, informing underwriting decisions, negotiating reinsurance rates, and engaging and informing key stakeholders.
Organizations that join Candello will receive a financial return that is commensurate with their application of the data to its full potential. Just as dollar-for-dollar return on investments for risk management and patient safety are extremely hard to calculate and validate, the same is true for data analytics. Because of the complexity of healthcare organizations and the systems and providers within them, direct attribution of any single solution to a financial return is a challenge to assert. However, Candello is one of very few healthcare databases that contains deep clinical details associated with actual harm events that can be analytically correlated to certain financial outcomes. As such, Candello data has inherent ROI characteristics.
As both the owner and a member of Candello, CRICO has examples of longitudinal measures of value and return for itself and its insureds, such as:
- Compared to a 2025 national average of 53%, CRICO’s 2025 Close Without Pay (CWOP) rate was 71% since the Claims Team operationalized its new Insurance Analytics tools in 2024
- Concurrent with the introduction of Litigation Analytics capabilities in 2022, CRICO’s Trial Win rate has increased from 86-95%
- Since Candello’s inception in 1998, CRICO’s Medical-Inflation-Adjusted Premium Per PCY has declined from $20,000 to $10,500, and its annual claims rate per 100 active insureds has remained flat as its insured base has grown from 7,391 to 18,985 providers
- By using the Settlement Pricing analytics tool to negotiate settlement values using comparative data, the Claims team estimates that more than $2m was saved in avoided overpayments on settled cases in the first 9 months of use
- For Beth Israel Lahey Health, Candello data was used to identify the need for and specific risk factors associated with missed and delayed diagnoses of Lung, Prostate, Breast and Colorectal cancers. Ambulatory Safety Nets (ASN) were formed to ensure screening and follow up with cancer patients. Over three years, BILH reported that 1,740 follow ups were completed and 25 cancers were detected (each a potential MPL case, 57% of which close with an average indemnity payment of $772.3K, according to national data). BILH also reported that the financial margin generated on services performed was ~2x operating expense of ASN program
Across all Candello AMC and Health System captive members, the rate of Cases Asserted per 100 Physicians has declined from 7.9 in 2014 to 4.2 in 2024, a steeper decrease than the national rate. Members use the Candello analytical tool suite to compare themselves more deeply to peers on key clinical and insurance metrics.
Some softer measures of Candello member value and return on investment include:
- The Candello Community serves as an engagement platform for its members to disseminate data and learnings to their stakeholder groups. Between 2020 and 2025, Candello members report that proactive requests for comparative MPL data from their key stakeholders has increased dramatically—Boards from 7% to 34%, Insureds from 10% to 43%, and Leadership from 35% to 64%
- The availability for members to invite their stakeholders to consume Candello education, analytical content, and collaborative opportunities has resulted in 76% of Community members being active weekly, 40% contributing content weekly, and a 33% increase in study group participation
- Since Candello has the only data set in the U.S. on sexual misconduct MPL cases, CRICO and Candello members have formed a focused collaborative with AMCs and health systems to identify solutions, best practices, key metrics, and guidance on SML risk reduction. Candello data also revealed the need for two other focused collaboratives—AI and Data Security and High-Value Claims
